Ouch

There is a girl that I met the first day I got to BYU. She was kind of rough-er looking- a little gothy and quiet. It just so happened that she was trying to get into nursing school, just like me. Automatically, this caused my claws to come out. I immediately put up this wall between us. Afterall, she's competetion. Just another person I had to knock out of the way to get into nursing school here. ( I'm telling you people, it's a mad house out here to get into that dang school.)
After that first greeting, we never saw eachother again.......
....Until the first Sunday this semester when I found out that she had moved into my WARD!!!! For some reason I just had this barrier built up that she was stuck up, competetive, and cut throat (probably because that's how I was acting.)
But today, when I went into the fishbowl to study, all the tables were full, except for her table. The only chair that was empty was the one next to her. I had to get this homework done, but I almost let my pride get in the way. Thankfully, I sat down, said a quick "hey", then continued to work on my chem assignment.
As I glanced over, I saw a "change of major" form sitting amongst her papers....
That got me curious. I started a conversation.
Lo and behold-she's nice. Normal. Sweet. One of the reasons she changed out of pre-nursing was because it was too competetive.
Wow, what a slap in the face to me. A truly humbling experience. I have had these moments 10 too many times-where I make assumptions.
Sometimes it's nice to get to know someone...to get proven wrong.
